La Folie with The Stranglers
from late -81
Stranglers' music continues to slowly fascinate me more and more... This record keeps growing (ain't so lame as some claim), especially if we take the bonus songs in same grip.
Caught between the super-creative sharpness of The Raven and more immediate convinceful pop of Aural Sculpture, LA FOLIE melts punkish material further down to synthish things. Makin' their obscure kind of new wave...
It happens in a quite cosy but still definitely not easy-listened way (which is very good here). Similar sounding music makers : early Elvis Costello, Lou Reed, Depeche Mode, The Undertones, Talking Heads, Siouxsie & The Banshees, Wire.
my Autumn Album 13 : 33
most Amusing song: NON STOP
most Beautiful song: GOLDEN BROWN
most Sexy song: PIN UP

Imperial Bedroom with Elvis Costello
Costello's most acclaimed album from 1982, emotionally a bit deeper and darker than the six before, void of the very catchiest pop singles he spitted out so freneticly in the latest 70's. Still these actual "classical" arrangements, based on piano rather than guitars, makes some pieces sound the most happily expansive Elvis ever has done, even when his voice is bitter.
Produced by Geoff Emerick, who had a hand in Beatles' post-Pepper records. Cover picture is playing with Picasso's "three musicians", which may represent the band members = The Attractions.

Woody Allen goes Black & White 1980
STARDUST MEMORIES by Woody Allen
Reminds me most of : Fellini's 8 1/2, except in the dialogue (which you cannot do without in a work of Woody, but maybe in a Fellini film).
Quoted dialogue//monologue which I think captures this movie most. Beside the humour, I would have an idealistic view contrasting much to Woody's role portrait here, but I think he says what he says in an spiritual manner. Interesting how he pressumes God's existence anyway! And captures the two true fields of creativity :-)
Woody /Sandy: -Who is this guy anyhow to rewrite the end of my movie? And sice when are all these guys involved? ... Every six months I meet a new group of studio heads.
some producer: -It's very disconcerting to me too, but you know, the mortality rate in this business is unbelievable.
Woody /Sandy: -I'll say it's like the Black Plague. Jesus!
(someone else: -I think you're wonderful! Can I have your autograph?)
Woody /Sandy: -I don't want anybody going to Jazz Heaven. That's a nitwit idea. The whole point of the movie is that nobody is saved.
some producer: -Sandy, this is an Easter film. We don't need a movie by an atheist.
Woody /Sandy: -To you I'm an atheist. To God I'm the loyal opposition.......
some producer: -I think you're being a little paranoid.
Woody /Sandy: -No, do you know what I'm being. I'm being realistic. You know, and that's why you don't like the movie.
some producer: -It's not a matter of what I like... Too much reality is not what people want.
Woody /Sandy: -Jazz heaven, that's the stupidest thing I've ever heard. You can't control life, it doesn't wind up perfectly. Only art you can control, art and mastubation, two areas in which I am an absolute expert.

Animation with Jon Anderson
May be Jon's most digital record ever? Anyhow he handles the synthetic landscape with warm curiousity, not with some too cool coldness. In same piece post punk can be intertwined with samba. Even humour seems to spin around the over-technifying tendencies he saw in 1983.
To be able to make a masterpiece of still quite progressive music with that early 80's equipment, is amazing in itself. Jon's joy and wonder of life remains the serious essence, ultimately focused in the long title track Animation about a child (his own?) taking her first breaths in this world.

Life And Death by Powell & Pressburger
These director pair still seems so splendid and powerful
plus sometimes quite funny, just enough comic to avoid losing grip of the great seriousness.
Same goes for The Red Shoes and Black Narcissus, also from late 40's
while this A Matter of Life and Death
is more maximized with really good sci-fi ideas.
[labled Romantic Fantasy]
A MATTER OF LIFE AND DEATH
by Michael Powell and Emeric Pressburger
UK 1946
made just after the WW II
about some soldiers potential "journey up to afterlife"

watched it three times within the last two months
and then talked every scene through with a friend

First Five episodes of FAME
the tv-series version created by Christopher Gore
New York 1982
which would have been very interesting if I had watched (more of) in those days it was aired. I remember almost every face, but nothing of the intrigues or how this world works. If a seven/eight year old person could understand... all the kinds of LOVE presented as subtle and passionate as in Fame.
