Record Retrospective : Joyride with Roxette

R.R. # 2391

a kind of Magical Mystery Tour on a Wheel of Fortune?!?

Well "Hello, you fool"! We begin this tour of Joyride, by simply present how much I love each album tune (on the swedish CD version). Before I used 1-7 stars, but now grown from 0 to 9 stars :

8 stars

1. Fading Like a Flower
2. The Big L.
3. Joyride

7 stars

4. Watercolours in The Rain
[composed by Fredriksson herself]
5. Things Will Never Be The Same
6. (Do You Get) Excited?

6 stars

7. Church of Your Heart
8. Knocking On Every Door
9. Spending My Time
10. Perfect Day

5 stars

11. I Remember You
12. Soul Deep ['91 version of their original '86]
13. Physical Fascination

4 stars

14. Hotblooded
15. Small Talk

= all good songs, many splendid, of rich variation.

As soon as Joyride was released, I gladly bought it in April 1991. That was (and is) an unusual behaviour for me, who often discover albums many months or years afterwards - seldom when they just met the world. It's the only Roxette record I've really grown up with, and listened to quite permanently during my sixteenth year. (All their other nine albums have been studied like historical gold, either a bit here and a bit there, or the whole during some week.)

Next round reflects which character, psychological feature or advantage each song has (in my ears) :

most Strong song
SOUL DEEP

most Beautiful song
SPENDING MY TIME

most Creative song
JOYRIDE

most Funny song
KNOCKING ON EVERY DOOR

most Serious song
THINGS WILL NEVER BE THE SAME

most Sexy song
THE BIG L.

most Mysterious song
(DO YOU GET) EXCITED?

most Ordinary Song
I REMEMBER YOU

most Sympathetic song
CHURCH OF YOUR HEART

most introspective song
WATERCOLOURS IN THE RAIN

most Superficial song
SMALL TALK

most Smart song
PHYSICAL FASCINATION

most Easy song
HOTBLOODED

most Cosy song
PERFECT DAY

most Dynamic song
FADING LIKE A FLOWER

Roxette's masterpiece was one of my first things on CD, so I never realised (until now) that the LP version got only 12 tracks on it, instead of the almost too much 15 tracks. The three tracks which got space on CD are Church of Your Heart, Soul Deep version '91 and I Remember You. If I would have to peel off three tracks from the CD, I'd rather live without Small Talk, Physical Fascination and Hotblooded.

Like the perfect production, the playing order of the tunes are professionally made. However I could personally wish they had been put together the following way :

imagined Side A
1) Joyride
2) Fading Like a Flower
3) Church of Your Heart
4) The Big L.
5) Hotblooded
6) Things Will Never Be The Same
7) Watercolours in The Rain

imagined Side B
8) (Do You Get) Excited?
9) Knocking On Every Door
10) Soul Deep
11) Physical Fascination
12) I Remember You
13) Spending My Time
14) Perfect Day
