Mad Ladder

Mad Ladder stands in the middle of a snow field, wide and winding. All day long reaching for the moon... Mad Ladder never grasps it, just gets too tired when evening falls. Down on his bed of snow again, this heavy earth seems to be the home of Mad Ladder. Maybe he believes he is a mountain??? Many living creatures tries to climb his empty stairs. At least he thinks they try - why otherwise pretend to climb...?! Camels come and reindeers go, exchanging a trace of sadness. Mad Ladder feels he would also like to climb, although another ladder. What if she would lead down instead... then the moon could be found somewhere under this snow?? That should make Mad Ladder much gladder! With one hand he immediately dives deep into the white. But his other hand still wants to strive high, up through the dark sky. Once again Mad Ladder gets his mind broken and his heart confused.

same words in a more poetic version:

Mad Ladder stands in the middle
of a snow field,
wide and winding. All day long
reaching for the moon...
Mad Ladder never grasps it, just gets too
tired when evening falls. Down on
his bed of snow again,
this heavy earth
seems to be the home of Mad Ladder. Maybe
he believes he
is a mountain???
Many
living creatures tries to climb
his empty
stairs. At
least he thinks they try - why
otherwise pretend to climb...?!
Camels come
and reindeers go,
exchanging a trace
of sadness. Mad
Ladder feels he would also like to climb,
although another
ladder. What if she
would lead down
instead... then
the moon could be found
somewhere under
this snow??
That should
make Mad Ladder much gladder!
With one hand
he immediately dives
deep into the
white.
But his other hand still
wants to strive high, up through the dark sky.
Once again Mad
Ladder gets
his mind broken
and his heart confused.

inspired by Camel's music plus even more a phrase of Emerson, Lake & Palmer, maybe written by Crimson's Sinfield, to be found here :

sadder ladder still can turn to glad
