99 Absolutely Best ABBA songs

in other words everyone!

Another session of ABBA-listenings has filled my last week - for which time in the history...?

So now I feel the simple passion for making a complete list - of how much I adore every song, compared to each other. Even though this will drown in everyone elses ABBA listings, I have some really unexpected darlings.

Last time I did this was during final days of -04, before new year -05, soon ten years ago. Discovered every bonus track and version I hadn't heard until then... many via the box "Thank You For The Music" compiled -94.

Believed I would feel almost the same for them now, but some tunes have actually fallen from the tower, while others have risen surprisingly high.

At least tried to weigh in the lyrics as much as the music and moods of the melodies. And since very exact positions are relative, I've also taken the chance to make my list a bit poetic (as I use to do).

Man On The Rocks by Mike Oldfield

And now the old master has done a pure rock-pop record.

Even though the compositions slowly gets alot better and better (taken as songs) I still have a hard time comprehend this being an Oldfield creation. Even harder so since a guy, Luke Spiller, sings every tune - no female at all.

The product sounds as something between a Queen, McCartney, U2 and Scorpions album, with some glimpses of Zeppelin, and everyone else.

OK, most classic Oldfield ingredients can still be traced, and it's really nice to hear they're not dead. Nevertheless I can't as usual give his (or their) instrumentations my fullest admiration. That would be easy in a longer piece of Oldfield, especially his super-inventive hour of AMAROK.

Man On The Rocks works on a more collective ground of arena rock (seldom my highest interest). Maybe it's simply because Mike focus so well on guitar playing this time... that I just miss some tubular bells and rythmic extravagance.

Hard to find something ground-breaking here. Even climbs close to the edge to boredom... Anyway the music's too powerful and beautiful to fall - stands tall.

as my Summer Album 14 : 68

most Soulful song: DREAMING IN THE WIND

most Mysterious song: CASTAWAY

most Amusing song: SAILING

most Beautiful song: FOLLOWING THE ANGELS (down)

most Strong song: MAN ON THE ROCKS

most Sexy song: NUCLEAR

most Grounded song: IRENE

Overall Album

3 instrumentations

6 feeling

4 synchronization + variation

3 historical importance

Many Many Versions of Moonlight Shadow

...now as an ode to the full moon, maybe...

Mike Oldfield created this song in 1983. Then more covers have been made than I could've dream of, mostly by female singers.

Genesis with Genesis

...in 1983 they still were only three: Collins, Banks and Rutherford, while many says their prog-rock had become really pop(ular). Anyway, to me this is a strong and beautiful collection of Collins persona, easy to confuse with his close solo albums, but at the same time contains those dynamic harmonies they always have mastered (already under Gabriel's hand).

as my Summer Album 14 : 67

most Soulful song: SILVER RAINBOW

most Mysterious song: THAT'S ALL

most Amusing song: ILLEGAL ALIEN

most Beautiful song: TAKING IT ALL TOO HARD (to heart)

Honest with Dave Stewart and his Spiritual Cowboys

Stewarts "solo" album from 1991 (short after Eurythmics) contains four of my favourite pieces ever. But maybe I'm the only one to choose the wildflower "You're Lost", the post-ELO:esque "Fade Away", the short intermezzo "Impossible" and most of all the surrealistic story "Cat With a Tail"?

First four tracks on the actual album I could easily have got along without - if he would've spared "Love Shines (on every little thing)" for this record. Maybe Dave could have been the sixth Travellling Willbury by that time?!

as my Summer Album 14 : 66

most Soulful song: (Find them all before they) FADE AWAY

most Mysterious song: IMPOSSIBLE

most Amusing song: CAT WITH A TAIL (a total stranger)

most Beautiful song: YOU'RE LOST (forever from my memory)

Madame McLennons Wax Museum (not so sexy)

Some twisted mirror images inspired by Sexy Sadie, the hottest honey pie on Beatles White Album. Here I maybe have "made a fool of everyone" as Lennon sings in the song, or rather tried to understand their characters a bit better...

Lucy Diamond,
where in this sky
can we see nude ones in disguise?

El'nor Rigby,
whose face you wear?
Are we all lonely out of fear?

Sergeant Pepper,
which submarine
do you prefer, the pink or green??

Lovely Rita,
what will we pay?
to get our bus along your way...

Miss Madonna,
your mum's still big!
I'd like you also more a pig

Mr. Mustard,
how do you mean?
Are you as mean as Mr. Bean?

Sexy Sadie!
we melt like wax
Your body makes it hard relax

John & Yoko!!
how do you sleep??
is there some secret you still keep?

Dearest Prudence,
why be so shy?
it's only love and that is why

Blackbird Baby,
who paints you white?
The Eggman Walrus wants a bite

Captain Marvel,
what did you kill?
some minutes or Bungalow Bill?

Joan of Maxwell,
when are you free?
to see museums here with me!

Desm and Molly!!
Ha-ha ha-ha!!
Have you been taken ob-la-da??

Girl Norwegian,
not made of wood?
your birch bark fills our neighbourhood

George McKenzie
plays real guitar
when there were yet no Rocky Starr...

by Pandora's door

Adorable Pandora!

How would your

box even be

able to contain

every pain in

our whole world...?

Hardly possible!

not even for a story

to be so mean

in giving you such

a bomb to hold...

I must have missed some other door

in your divine

castle, Pandora...?

Probably it's just

every man

and woman who

full of loneliness

opens their own

curiosity and then

naked

like in Paradise

full of regrets

doesn't have the nerve to keep

themselves open

for neither biggest pleasure

or greatest pain

again and again?!?

Why must millions

of them blame

you for their shortcoming

to live and love like

proud whores

paying apples with apples...

How come

people among people

projects their same old shame

on you;

for their need for only

one goddess

the holy virgin

which they never

had been able to fulfill

yet...

Anyway,

you dared to return

to this fucking BOX

quite empty of experience,

'cause now I finally

got a missing puzzle piece :

You not just opened

it once

but you opened it twice!!

So clever and

how beautiful, Pandora!

First time

sick madness went out

and second time

the world became full of hopefulness...!

Perhaps our sorrows of

your box is just

potential -

if we forget to grasp some

ground and reach to

the bottom

of things...

Probably our hope

lies in how much

of each content we

make us able to see...!

(but in this case

I might still be blind)

Back with your Back in Brazil

my transformation of Back in The U.S.S.R. on Beatles White Album

the lyrics through a kind of distorted looking glass

[intro flight, from Ringo to Rio]

[first verse]

Feathers fill the jungle air with city sun,
shining all around your waist

By the way banana stocks grows pretty fun
Girl, you've got a fruitful taste!

[R A]

You're Back with Your Back in Brazil
Please Gimme Some Samba Until...
I'm Back on My Back in Brazil

[second verse]

Never been some place like this, a paradise
B! seems like two golden boobs

If I'm still awake tomorrow - will your dice (??)
roll us up to 22

[R B]

I'm Back on My Back in Brazil
Please Gimme Some Samba Until You're
Back with Your Back in
Back with Your Back in
Back with Your Back in Brazil

[stick]

Some of Chile's cheerleaders blows my mind
They dance like life were short

But Rio still shows a better kind
No tortoise never run run run run, run run run run, runs for sport

[solo]

[third verse]

Show us straight to big round things like cocoanuts,
pineapples so full of joy!

Let us hear your finger bells cling close to butts;
drum another dream for boys!

[R A]

You're Back with Your Back in Brazil
Please Gimme Some Samba Until...
I'm Back on My Back in Brazil

[outro flight]

Dance while Ringo play now!

[though Starr never did on this track...
well, I even used to believe Ringo was the one who sang it
but McCartney can do magic]

Mad Alice not Opening Her Mirror

my transformation of Dear Prudence
on Beatles White Album

Lennons lyrics through a bit distorted looking glass
still about (wrong kind of) meditation :

Mad Alice, will you stay in your cave?

Mad Alice, like the earliest grave?

The clouds are out
Our town is black
Your moon is white
This track leads back

Mad Alice, will you live anyway?

Mad Alice, close that magazine!

Mad Alice, truth lies in between...

The world is mad
Some owls can laugh
Your mouse is dead
on photograph

Mad Alice, will you realise you dream?!

Feel them near, near, near...
Hear them fear, fear, fear...
See them here!

Mad Alice, why we hear you moan?

Mad Alice, be a woman soon?

The sun will take
my glasses on [no, off]
So let us feel
more glad than tough

Mad Alice, don't you want another room?

Crossing Zebra Road

originally intended to be an inverted reflection of "Why Don't We Do it in The Road?", but rather became something along the lines of "Revolution part 1"

Some miles ahead of Abbey Road

a year or two before The Beatles' end

we discovered a more specially chocking

zebra crossing which twisted our minds

         with unbelievably BLACK stripes

on a very WHITE, unwinding street

well, yes monkey, you saw right!

but we heard a bird complain from left:

"Why do people like to cross this zebra

more than any other fucking thing?!

Why can't they treat every street as equals?!"

then while our old brown shoes

stepped on that crazy creature

so curiously but lazy

for the 4.444:th time

           like Beatles rolled over Beethoven

           our reason began to (r)evolve:

"How boring if no road were unique...!

and if every street deserved the same

                        amount of attention - then

how could we dare to adore...?

and why would one bother to love anymore

one's favourite zebra some more than some horse?!"

17 June 2014

White Bird (my first white beatle)

Transformation inspired by BlackBird, maybe most melodic track on Beatles' white album

a tune I thought was written in India but just found out it was born in Scotland?!

White bird screaming in the morning sun

takes that student hat
down to the bay,
rides away

We will always long for
her to visit us some day

Beetle fly!
beetle fly!
out of the black
into summer white

Seagull cry!
seagull cry!
out of your nest
to some city bright

White bird screaming in the morning sun

makes me shake these knees
of love and fear
- if comes near...

We were always dreaming
she would visit us some day
